Compilation film about Walcheren. The documentary Door Walcheren (Through Walcheren) consists of four short films. The first is a portrait of Middelburg, with special attention paid to the history of the city and its traditions such as ‘tilting at the ring’. The most important buildings, streets, and squares are shown. Of note are the many women in traditional Zeeland costume. The other films show Veere, the coast of Walcheren, and the Westkapelle, with its distinctive lighthouse and seawall. This seawall was bombed by the British on October 3, 1944, leading to the drowning of about 150 of the village’s inhabitants. Eighty percent of Westkapelle was destroyed as a result of the bombing, the flooding of Walcheren, and the fighting after the Allied landing.
