Comedy in which a cheerful, anti-bourgeois family from the countryside moves to the city, but they aren’t welcome anywhere because of their baby and their dog. So they decide to build their own “portable bungalow”, but when the house is finally ready, it collapses. Eventually they become rich, buy a big house, and rent out apartments specifically to tenants with children and dogs. Theo and his family (wife, child, and dog) drive by car (with a portable turntable and jazz records) from the countryside (Iowa) to the city. In the apartment that they rent, they find out that dogs and children are not allowed. The father smuggles them in through the fire escape, but gets caught, and they have to leave the house. Then they decide to build a house themselves, but in the process lose sight of their child. This child has since begun hanging out with three black street children. Then it turns out that the house was built in the wrong place, and the entire house is moved (seeing as the house itself is portable). When it is finally in place, it collapses. But the family strikes oil, becomes rich, buys a big house, and rents out apartments specifically to tenants with children and dogs.
