The naval base Den Helder has been heavely damaged during World War II. Houses have been demolished and in places where there used to be resedential areas, the terrain lies fallow. Heaps of rubble or remains of bunkers are everywhere. The chief of the American Red Cross, Giblin, pays a visit to Den Helder, lays a wreath at a memorial sign and hands out presents to the citizens.
