A lookback on the occasion of the first lustrum of the liberation, consisting of already shown archive material and newly recorded material, edited into a whole. Central element in the lookback are shots made "then" (May 1945) and "now" (May 1950) showing the same examples. SHOTS: - blowing flags on buildings; - several shots of war damage "then": buildings are in ruins; railway yards are destroyed; trains on the tracks are shot to ruins; the Wieringermeer polder and Walcheren are under water; destroyed bridges are in the water; the lock near IJmuiden is one big chaos of battered blocks of concrete; barefoot children look for food between the garbage or in a dustbin; - several shots of the situation "now": Wieringermeer and Walcheren are dry again; whole trains move along perfect tracks or across good railway bridges; the lock near IJmuiden has been repaired, the ship "Oranje" returns from Indonesia and is locked; wel dressed children feed bread to the animals; everywhere are new houses, blocks of flats and farms; - ext. Concertgebouw; ext. Rijksmuseum; - posters of cultural events; - war gaves cemetery; close ups of grave crosses of American, English and Polish soldiers; graves of Russian soldiers marked by numbers; - flowers are laid down at a war monument.
