Newsreels in which Dutch subjects of a certain week are presented.
Improvement of tulips: three methods are shown, two where man interferes with nature and two where nature makes its own varieties. Meant is cross-fertilization through artificial fertilization or X-ray treatment and natural mutation, where flowers with a deviant form and/or colour arise spontaneously, which are used to breed more. SHOTS: - In gardens and bulb fields the tulips are in bloom; pickers take the flowers away; - in a test greenhouse the tulips are crossed: with a fine brush pollen is transferred from one species to the gynoecium of another species; - the seeds that evolve out of that are set into container and for now will only become blades; elsewhere on the field the result of a cross-fertilization done five years ago is now visible: a new tulip variety has come into being; - in a laboratory in Amsterdam tulip bulbs are radiated using an X-ray tube; - the visible result is shown: a radiated and a non-radiated tulip are shown; - in a field of tulips one tulip has a different colour scheme.
